Creating Motion Graphics for Video

Jan 5, 2021

What Are Motion Graphics?

Motion graphics are elements such as text or a graphic design added to a video in post-production. They have various uses but are typically used to provide the audience with specific information in a visually exciting way.

What Makes Motion Graphics Important?

Motion graphics are essential because they’re most commonly used to help provide the audience with meaningful context and additional details in relation to the video. In fact, motion graphics are utilized so often on TV and in advertisements, that you probably see them all the time, but just don’t realize it – which is the whole point!

What Are The Most Common Types of Motion Graphics?

Lower Thirds

What is a lower third? According to Studio Binder, a lower third is a combination of text and graphical elements placed in the lower area of the television screen to give the audience more information. Lower thirds are typically used in interviews and documentaries as a simple way to help the audience keep track of who the subjects are and sometimes even help to identify a time or place.

What Does A Lower Third Look Like?

Here are a few examples of motion graphics from some of the videos produced by InnerAction Media.

Logo Animation

According to Wyzowl, logo animation is essentially taking a ‘static’ logo, breaking it into parts, and having those parts animate together – breathing new life into the idea of logo design and giving your digital brand toolkit more punch than ever before!

Logo animation can be used both before and after a video. It is an effective way to subtly reinforce the connection between your brand/business and the video.

What is an Example of Logo Animation?

We created the graphics for our client Arrow Engineering to use for their short vlog videos. You’ll notice that we have added a quick logo animation at the beginning and end of the video.

Now that you have a better understanding of what motion graphics are and what makes them so important, I thought it might help to include some of the most common mistakes people make when creating them.

3 Mistakes To Avoid When Creating Motion Graphics

  • Utilizing Graphics That Are Difficult to See or Read

This is probably the most common mistake people make when creating motion graphics. So, to avoid this, you need to make sure that your graphic’s color and size stands out from the video.

  • Motion Graphics Aren’t Consistent Throughout the Video

Not only is it essential to make sure that all of your motion graphics work well with the video individually, but also as a whole. One great way to accomplish this consistency is to utilize the same font and colors for all of your motion graphic elements.

  • Using Motion Graphics That Are Too Distracting

When you’re creating motion graphics, you need to keep in mind who your audience is. When motion graphics are correctly made, they subtly grab the audience’s attention to relay information, but should never be jarring or distracting.

While I covered a lot of information in this blog, it’s actually very simple to create motion graphics that are equally as effective as they are visually attractive. This can be accomplished as long as you keep in mind that the best motion graphics are easy to see and read, are consistent and aren’t too distracting for the audience.
